Stephen Sloan graduated from the University of Toronto Mississauga (then known as Erindale College) with a B.A. in English Literature.  He then moved on to the University of Western Ontario (now Western University) for an MLIS degree in 1979.  Post-graduation, he moved to Fort McMurry, working for the Fort McMurray Public Libraary and Syncrude Canada.

In 1988, Stephen Sloan was hired as a Librarian in the Engineering Library. &nbsp;Within a a couple of years, the microcomputer revolution overtook UNB and the Library system and he moved to Harriet Irving Library to take on transitioning to the new environment. &nbsp;His entusiasm eventually led him to pply for a Futures Fund grant. &nbsp;With this he requested the purchase of a UNIX computer. &nbsp;Usng this platform, Sloan established UNB's World Wide Web service, regarded as the first such installation at a Canadian university.
