Plaque Inscription/Text Associated: The first piece to be installed at Jacob's Yard, it was selected from eight submissions by prominent New Brunswick artists by a special jury of artists, art professionals, UNB students and faculty. The piece draws on UNB's distinctive architectural style to unite the themes of people, nature, and technology. The artist is a native of Edmundston, N.B.
Notes: Made of corten steel and worth $20 000, this piece was sponsored by Long Beautification Fund Lafarge of Canada. There were 25 sculptors who submitted their work for the project and Jacques Martin was chosen among them.
The weld that held the axe to the base had begun to rust and break in 2008. Under advisement of Jacques Martin, the part was re-welded.
