Name: Acadiensis: Journal of the History of the Atlantic Region

An image of the cover of the first issue of Acadiensis, vol. 1, no. 1 (January 1901), a quarterly devoted to the interests of the maritime provinces of Canada, 1975. PR; Series 1; Sub-series 5; Item 6731.

Previous/other names: Acadiensis

Prominent date(s) of activity: 1971 - present

Role/purpose: Acadiensis focuses on the study of Atlantic Canada, with original research on the history, literature, sociology, economics, political science, and other aspects of the region. The journal also maintains an authoritative bibliography of regional history. Acadiensis is run by the UNB History Department.

Note(s): The name "Acadiensis" was coined by David Russell Jack and is derived from Acadia, a term which encompasses the territories of the Maritime provinces and parts of Maine and Quebec. The original Acadiensis magazine was created to give recognition to the local history of the area and create a public interest in the region. It was funded in part by the New Brunswick Historical Society and was run by Jack. It ran for eight years before the magazine was shut down due to lack of interest from the public. Acadiensis was revived in 1971 in an effort to provide an outlet for research on Atlantic Canada and create interest in further discovery of the region's history.
