History: Boxing has had many incarnations at UNB. Although the term boxing is not used, and there is no mention of a team, in 1883 there is a “fighting editor” in the University Monthly that reports that “Nemo” has been repairing his boxing gloves and invites men to the cellar for a match. In 1884 students are told in the University Monthly to participate in Boxing with the seniors. In 1910 a Boxing Club was established at UNB. This club was relatively short-lived, but an attempt to re-establish the club was made in 1930. In 1931 the attempts were successful, with hoped to send the members to the Maritime Meet. In 1934 UNB’s first Boxing Team went to the Maritime Intercollegiate Boxing Tournament in Halifax. 1935 brought financial issues at the University, and the Boxing team threatened to not pay their levies if they did not receive the requested $50 grant. The grant was received although budget cuts were made to a majority of the student organizations and teams in January of 1935. In 1941 UNB was scheduled to hold the Maritime Intercollegiate Boxing meet, however due to conditions surrounding the Second World War, intercollegiate leagues were barred. UNB instead hosted the NB Amateur Championships and a Maritime intercollegiate invitation meet, combining the two into one event. It was, at that time, the biggest boxing event ever held in the Maritimes. In 1945 the ban was lifted, and in 1946 UNB held the Maritime Intercollegiate Championships. By 1952 interest in boxing had dwindled, and no longer was recognized as an Amateur Athletic Association sponsored sport at UNB
