Joyce (Douthwright) Slipp is a UNB alumna (BPE 1972, BA 1974) and a former athlete, lecturer, and long-time coach of both the women's basketball and field hockey teams. For her accomplishments during her undergraduate degree, she was awarded the Colin B. Mackay Shield for UNB Female Athlete of the Year in 1974. Slipp was a member of the Canadian National Women's Basketball Team from 1969 to 1976, at which time she was named captain of the Canadian Olympic Basketball Team in the first year women's basketball was included at the Olympic Games. Slipp then went on to become a lecturer in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation (now known as the Faculty of Kinesiology) while simultaneously serving as coach for the women's field hockey and basketball teams, often coaching both teams at the same time. From 1990 to 1995 Slipp served as a Sport Consultant to the New Brunswick Provincial Government, and upon her return to UNB she took on the role of Assistant Athletic Director as well as head coach of the Varsity Reds women's basketball program.

As a coach, Slipp led her field hockey and basketball teams to eight and three Atlantic Championships respectively. She was named AUAA Coach of the Year in 1978, 1979, and 1999, and won the CIS Coach of the Year in 1986 and 1989 for her efforts in field hockey. In 1992 Slipp was honoured by her field hockey peers with the field hockey rookie of the year award named as the Joyce Slipp Rookie of the Year Award. She has been inducted into the Fredericton and Moncton Walls of Fame, as well as into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 1992; the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 1998; and the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000. Joyce Slipp retired in 2006.
