Ken McGoogan was UNB’s twenty-second writer-in-residence for the 2003-2004 academic year.  McGoogan was born in Montreal and grew up in Ste-Marthe-sur-le-lac. He writes as a historian, biographer, and journalist. The work he was doing around the time he was UNB's writer-in-residence mostly involved work on Samuel Hearne, an early explorer of the Canadian north. McGoogan uses historical evidence gathered from researching Samuel Hearne to propose that the man was the basis for Samual Taylor Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

He gave readings on September 22nd, 2003, in Memorial Hall; on October 7th, 2003, in the Ward Chipman Library Building in UNBSJ; and a farewell reading on April 3rd, 2004, at MacPhail’s Taproom in Fredericton.

McGoogan was preceded by Anne Simpson and succeeded by Erin Mouré.
