- While Dr. MacGillivary was completing his BPE at UNB in the early 1960's, he was team captain for the Red Devils hockey team - which advanced to the Intercollegiate Athletic Union Championship in 1959-60 and 1961-62.
- Served as Technical Director, and was lifetime member of the New Brunswick Amateur Hockey Association (NBAHA), now known as Hockey New Brunswick.
- Member of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association Development Council.
- Was general manager of Atlantic Canadian age-class hockey teams.
- Member of the Selection committee for the 1987 & 1988 Canadian world junior hockey teams.
