Ken McGoogan, an award winning author and journalist, was UNB’s twenty-second writer-in-residence for the 2003-2004 academic year. McGoogan was born in Montreal and grew up in Ste-Marthe-sur-le-lac. He writes as a historian, biographer, and journalist. The work he was doing around the time he was UNB's writer-in-residence mostly involved work on Samuel Hearne, an early explorer of the Canadian north. McGoogan uses historical evidence gathered from researching Samuel Hearne to propose that the man was the basis for Samual Taylor Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
