He was born in West Virginia, US, on January 1, 1949, but left the US as a young teenager due to being what he described as "disillusioned all the more by the war going on at the time and especially by the abiding racism." He took up writing due to a speech impediment which left him severly debilitated. He held a previous writer-in-residence position at Queen’s University in 1993, and was a contributing editor for a number of magazines, including ''Quill and Quire ''and ''Toronto Life.
