Melinda H. Seaman, the former head of the English Department at the Bishop Strachan School for Girls in Toronto, was appointed Dean of Women at UNB in 1960. A graduate of the University of Toronto (BA, MA), "Miss Seaman (was) the first permanent Dean of Women appointed at the provincial university." In addition to the duties associated with her new position, which involved "the jurisdiction of all co-eds attending the university", she was a lecturer in the English Department. Seaman resigned in 1963 to accept a position as Assistant Professor of English at Trinity College and Principal of St. Hilda's College, University of Toronto. She was succeeded by Jean Ramsay who remained in the position until 1965.
