In 1989 Monique Frize was appointed the first holder of the new Women in Engineering Chair at UNB. Unique in Canada, and perhaps the world, the Chair was funded jointly by Northern Telecom and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC). As chairholder, Dr. Frize was a role model for women engineers. Her duties included teaching and conducting research in the Faculty of Engineering, and leading a campaign to encourage young women to pursue careers in engineering.

Frize, a former president of the Canadian Committee on Women in Engineering, was the first woman to graduate from the University of Ottawa with a Bachelor of Applied Science and Engineering degree. Prior to her appointment at UNB, she was a Research Assocaite in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at l'Université de Moncton. In 1993, she received the Order of Canada for her "dedication to the status of women, particularly in scientific endeavours..." She has been a faculty member at the University of Ottawa and Carleton University since 1997.
